First snow of the year!
Today was the first snow of the season! I have to say, it was really pretty watching the snow fall. My girls could not stop watching the snow and I felt so bad telling them to stop. One of the girl's parents were late so after class we sat and watched the snow together. It was absolutely adorable.
Here is the breakdown on jobs:
MYB- almost on holiday break! I am in love with my classes and I am watching the MYB Nutcracker tomorrow night with Rosa.
NDEO- things are slowing down. Not much to report on there. I am spending more time there since the company is on hiatus.
Contradiction- the company is on hiatus right now but we are still fundraising. Look for my next blog on how you can contribute! I am also teaching for Contradiction and I LOVE my new classes. The kids are a bit older and so it is such a new and exciting challenge for me.
Birthday-I HAD THE BEST BIRTHDAY EVER! It was filled with fun, friends, drinking, dancing, the White House Christmas Tree lighting! I started celebrating on Tuesday and ended on Sunday. I LOVE MY DC FRIENDS!!!!!!!!!
Life- Its cold here- all the time! I really miss dancing because I am letting my ankle heal and have not danced in a month. BLAH! Let's see, most of my friends are going back to Cali for the holidays and so am I! Other than that, things are pretty good here. The year of being 22 is starting out strong!
Cali- I will see you very very soon. Can't wait for a Leong Christmas!
-Chrissie
shout out to the roommies!
Rosa and Sarah have been best friends since high school and also went to college together. They are basically my life savers and they make me love living in Silver Spring. The entire apartment is so sophisticated and they really help make the apartment feel like home. It is so comforting to know that when I come home at night, they are there. I can talk to them whenever I need to and I talk to both just about every day/night. They laugh at my dumb jokes, come to my shows, listen to my rants, watch the Biggest Loser with me, drive me home, and give me honest opinions of all the clothes I buy online. I love them SO much and I really lucked out with this living situation!
Rosa and Sarah, I LOVE YOU! Thanks for everything!

update from CA
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I am writing to you from my Dad's computer so that means I am on the West (Best) Coast right now. I just reread my blogs from the past year and WOW has it been an eventful year. I can't believe I have been in DC for almost a year.
Here goes the work update:
Contradiction Dance- We completed the show Living, Breathing, Human Organism? and it was an incredible experience. No doubt, it was tough on my brain and body but definitely a wonderful journey. I really love our company directors and members and I am excited to sign on for Spring! My mom flew out for the show and it was wonderful to see her!
MYB- It really makes a difference if kids start ballet at the age of 2 or 3. The kids that started this session are really behind and have a lot of catching up to do! We are Nutcracker-ed out at MYB and we had two girls dress up and visit our classes. I let each girl give a high-five to a ballerina! It was absolutely adorable!
NDEO- Oh the NDEO....we are still catching up from conference and I need to put in more time there. I need to go a bit faster there so things with the Dance and Disability group will get off the ground!
Hmmm let's see what else- I hurt my ankle again and it is really unfortunate. I am gearing up for the best birthday ever. I really really really really really really really love my friends in DC!
I love and miss DC right now. More updates when I return from OC!

its winter!
How are you? Well its November already and it is WINTER. Yup, we are at freezing temperatures already! This week is a bit warmer but still........its glove/scarf season already!
It has been a whirlwind of a month! Let's see, the NDEO conference was good and a bit tiring. I loved meeting professors from all over the US and it reminded of what I want to do with my life. I snuck home for a weekend and it was such a blessing to see the family and eat Mexican food! I also took another trip to NYC that was really fun! Here are the updates:
MYB- We are starting a new session! Most of my girls are returning but some are new. This session our theme is the Nutcracker!
Contradiction- The company is gearing up for our show on Nov 19 and 20th! The movement is really hard and challenging but I am trying my best.
NDEO- We have a lot of after conference work to do but its fine.
The next two weeks I will be really focusing on the show and my mom is coming to watch! Of course will fit in a few happy hours though!
I love and miss CA

go skins?!
HOW IS OCTOBER HALFWAY GONE????? This fall has flown by and we are getting ready for winter already! Let's see, here how things are so far:
Contradiction Dance- kicking my butt! It is such a joy to wake up and DANCE! I do not have much modern dance training, so this whole genre is new to my body. I am constantly sore but I feel like I am in good shape! I really LOVE all the other company members and the directors. We are still working on our kickstarter campaign, so let me know if you would like to support us! For some reason, I can't post the link but it is on my facebook!
MYB- Some of my girls are ANGELS. some are not.........The theme of the 7 dwarfs is going well and I have been working really hard on having a well rounded class.
NDEO- We are currently gearing up for conference! I am so excited to meet my Dance Education heroes! I know I am going to be super stressed at conference with everything we have to do, but I hope it is all worth it!
Let's see, I really have been enjoying the city and I am sad to be leaving it the next few weekends. I love my friends here and I am so grateful for them. Football is big here, so I am trying to get into that (go skins!?) and I am trying to get all my grad school stuff together. I work A LOT so I have been working on my work/play balance. NYC for one day this week then its off to the NDEO conference in AZ! I will update again sooN!
I love and miss CA

falling into fall
Wow, it has been a crazy month! Here is a quick recap since my last post:
NYC -fun-as usual. I ate great food, had great company, and it made me so excited to start my grad school apps.
LA/OC- I will always be a California Girl. Disneyland, the beach, friends, family, who could ask for more? I was able to see some Royals, some SGD, eat some carne asada fries, and bake in the sun! I also met up with some East Coast friends as well and went to a crazy cool Disney event.
DC- Yup, lived it up in this city!
Philly- Yup, went to Philly for one day again! Marnee came to visit and we saw the liberty bell, ate a cheesesteak, and walked around the Magic Garden.
So now that summer is over (blahhhhhhh) FALL IS HERE! That means big sweaters, jeans, boots, and shopping!!!!!!!!! My new fall schedule is pretty packed. 6 days a week, 3 jobs, and about 55 hours of work a week! This fall I will work at the National Dance Education Org. as a program assistant, Contradiction Dance as a company member, and MYB faculty and admin assistant. It is really weird getting paid to dance but it something I already love. I AM SO EXCITED FOR MY NEW CLASSES TO START! I have been prepping, thinking, and anxiously waiting for the new session and it is finally here.
Hope everybody is doing well- I love and miss CA
-Chrissie

Moving Miracles
It has been a busy summer here in DC! Hmmm, where should I start?
This month started on a sad note. My friend left DC for grad school and it was hard to see him go. That is what is so hard living in this city. Three of my friends left this month and even though I will see them again, I miss them.....
On a brighter note, I just got back from Buffalo/Toronto where my family celebrated my parents' 30th Anniversary! Buffalo was absolutely amazing. I went to check out this studio called Moving Miracles, where they only serve the differently-abled population. They have special studios, strong props, and a variety of different tools to help their students dance. I was fortunate enough to take a class with 6 girls with Down Syndrome and one girl performed her solo for me. The women who work there are incredibly dedicated to their students and are definitely my dance educator heroes. Oh, and I also had the best Buffalo wings of my LIFE. I am actually craving them.
After Buffalo I went to Toronto for some Ohana time. The seven of us went to Niagra Falls and visited my cousins in Toronto. My siblings are my best friends and it was great just taking time to NOT work and be with them. Of course, the falls were beautiful but they really made me miss Ghana (Kintampo Falls) and the experience of finding a waterfall/swimming in a waterfall.
Work is work. Remember when I was an intern? At NDEO it was deja vu week and I folded, stuffed, sealed mailings and shredded my hands off. I kept telling myself ," someone has to do it." But I can't wait to have my masters and do more meaningful work. (Grad school apps open next month!) MYB is off for the summer and so I am only working the office now. I am subbing for the Little Tots program tonight but I really miss my girls. Next year I am teaching the 3 yr olds and I will really miss my 4 year olds but my schedule for next year gives me Sundays off! I officially signed the contract to work at MYB from Sept-June! Scary but exciting right?
Well this week I am off to NYC on Friday for some time with my friends and some fun.
I love and miss CA

I am so blessed to know each and every one of you. See ya at dinner!

corn hole
Corn Hole is my new favorite game! It is basically like a bean bag toss but there are teams and the bags are filled with corn. I had my doubts about it at first but now I love it!
Sorry, I haven't updated in awhile. July is a really busy month for me bc I am working every day!
So here it goes:
Work is going alright. It is great to have only two jobs and things have been busy at both. At the NDEO we are launching our Dancers with Disabilities forum and I couldn't be more excited! This is one of the reasons I came to DC and all my work is finally turning into something. The forum is for dance educators that work with the differently-abled population and we have been working on it for a few months. My classes at MYB are a lot harder this session. During the summer we have new students that don't really know what to do. Plus it is SO hot that the kids just don't want to dance. My theme is Pixar for this session and every week we go over a different Pixar movie.
I started getting closer to people in this city. My roomies are AMAZING. They have been here for me above and beyond and I love being apart of their awesome group of friends. It helps having friends here!
Did I tell you I danced with a company? WHAT!! Yup! Stay tuned to see what happens next!
These next few weeks are packed with visitors, friends, trips, work, and going to the pool!
I LOVE and MISS CA!

let it snow!
What do when one is snowed in and there is no cable or internet:
1. Wake up late
2. Take a long time to eat and prepare food
3. Talk on the phone with people from CA
4. Write
5. Read
6. Watch episodes of Gilmore Girls that my roommate brought
7. Take a walk and watch everyone shovel out their cars
8. Eat the snow
9. Nap
10. Repeat the above
Over 2 feet of snow! I LOVE IT!! PTL we just got internet back! Tuesday we are gonna get hit with 5 more inches!
the long awaited INDIA post
I have been putting off this post, for no apparent reason, and now that I am snowed in, w/o any internet I have no distractions or reasons to not tell everybody how India was.
For those of you who read the team blog, this part may be a bit redundant but you can also skip to the next paragraph if you wish. Every day we were in India was a full day of ministry. One day we would give clothes to people with leprosy, another food to people with HIV, we had Henna put on us while chatting with ladies who had escaped prostitution, and the list goes on and on. Sometimes we spent five minutes in a village and other times there was so much chaos, it felt like we were in a village for hours. A lot of our days were filled with travel and long meals. The last days we were there we hosted VBS for 1200 orphans, which was the highlight of the trip for me. We stayed in a “hotel” that was basically a hostel and I had three other roommates from the team.
A lot of India reminded me of Ghana. Eating with your right hand, the villages, the drinking water that came in a bag, and the abundance of adorable children were all so similar to the place I studied abroad. In a way, I feel as if I understood the culture a bit better and could respect the differences. But it still killed me to see a village with no running water but an abundance of cell phone reception.
My favorite part was VBS. This huge affair was carefully planned and I think excellently executed. The kids were divided into 4 groups and had four stations to go through-crafts, games, teaching, and bible memory. I was helping the games station and at first I was a bit disappointed, it seemed like something Phil (my brother) would be good at, but not necessarily me. Surprisingly, I liked having fun with the kids and just like dance; I did not always need words to speak to the kids.
Josh and I sponsor a child in India through the Harvest India organization. For just 30 dollars a month we help provide her schooling, housing, classes, and food. We were lucky we got to meet her! She is incredibly thin, has a big smile, and loves to sing. Once we met her she clung to my side and she made sure I was always looking for her. It was such a joy to meet her and be able to meet her brother and sisters. Another little girl really stood out to me because she was the poorest little orphan girl I have ever seen. While all the girls had long hair and dresses, she had short hair and tattered shorts on. I could tell by watching her that she had a strong spirit and could defend herself if needed. Her name is super hard to remember so I just called her Mandy in my head. (Her name sounded something like that) On the last day of VBS I asked her to take a picture with me and I walked her to the big tent. From then on, she called me “mom” and I had never felt the weight of the word until then. My heart sunk and I realized I may have given her the most affection she has ever had. During the parade we had, both of my girls found me in the midst of everyone and we walked together. Later that night, when we came back to the orphanage, Mandy found me as soon as I stepped out of the van. She clung onto my waist and did not let go until I had to leave. Another girl told me she was ten years old, but she was the size of a six year old. I nearly cried as I said good-bye to them and I told them that they were beautiful, God loves them, and so do I.
Will I go back to India? Maybe. I know I will always support Suresh, Harvest India, and the girl I support (actually she will be too old for the orphanage soon). I feel that God has shown me how much need there is in this world. We served thousands of people in the two weeks I was there and I want to go to more countries to see what God is doing there. I learned more than what I can write in this one post, but I would love to talk more about my experience with any of you. Thanks for reading and thanks for the continuous support!
